Nikon just announced the  20.8-megapixel Nikon 1 J5, the newest mirrorless model in Nikon’s portable Nikon 1 compact system camera line. The biggest headline feature about the Nikon 1 J5 is its extremely fast 20 frames per second (fps) continuous burst shooting with full autofocus AF.

If you’re going to test a new camera, I can think of few places better suited than the Big Island of Hawaii. And that’s precisely what I, and a number of my colleagues in the photo press, had a chance to do recently with the new 28-megapixel Samsung NX500 camera. We put Samsung’s newest mirrorless compact system camera (CSC) through its paces in diverse settings on the island, each designed to challenge the NX500 and ourselves.

Photokina 2014 in Germany has been covered widely on the Internet already—including our own extensive reporting on the show on Shutterbug.com—so there’s no need for me to rehash the major announcements from the event, such as the latest full-frame cameras from Canon and Nikon and the like. My photo report here is aimed at sharing some wider ranging thoughts and perspectives on this important biennial show and what it told us about photography today and where it might be heading tomorrow.

The much-buzzed about Konost FF camera is the brainchild of a new American start-up company (made up of engineers and designers) who are passionate about photography. The company's 20-megapixel, 35mm full-frame digital rangefinder camera is currently under development but is already attracting a lot of attention on the web for its Leica-like look and its simplicity.

Leica has just unveiled a stylish new rangefinder camera set created in collaboration with rock star Lenny Kravitz: the Leica M-P “Correspondent” by Kravitz Design. The set includes a Leica M-P digital rangefinder camera and two classic Leica lenses: a Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH and a Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH, delivered as a set in a bespoke case.

Samsung has just launched a smaller and lighter version of its flagship NX1 mirrorless camera: the highly portable NX500. This little camera, which comes in black, brown, and white versions, uses the same 28MP BSI APS-C sensor that’s in the NX1 along with several other features including 4K and UHD video shooting, the DRIMeV image processor, NX AF system III, and Samsung Auto Shot.

Olympus unveiled its latest, high-end mirrorless camera this morning: the tough, small and powerful OM-D E-M5 Mark II. The E-M5 II uses a Micro Four Thirds sensor similar to the one in the previous model – it once again offers 16 megapixels of resolution – but Olympus says the Live-MOS chip has been redesigned.

Panasonic just introduced the new 16-megapixel DMC-GF7 mirrorless camera. The Panasonic GF7, like the new Fuji XA-2, offers selfie-friendly shooting features including a 180-degree flip-up monitor in a classic styled camera.

The 24.3-megapixel Sony Alpha A7 II mirrorless, full-frame camera, which was announced in Japan nearly a week ago, made its official debut in the U.S. this morning. The Sony A7 II uses the same, 35mm-sized, 24.3-megapixel CMOS sensor as the previous model but the new camera adds 5-axis image stabilization, making it the first full frame camera with this feature.

Sony had a surprise camera announcement this morning: Sony Japan, that is. The Sony mothership in Tokyo unveiled the new Sony Alpha A7 II, a successor to the Sony Alpha A7, which was the first full-frame mirrorless camera on the market.

Fujifilm was showing off its new toys at photokina today and we got some hands-on time with these latest X-series cameras and lenses. Initially announced on September 10th, the Fujifilm X100T and XT-1 Graphite Silver cameras, and Fujinon XF50-140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR and XF56mm F1.2 R APD lenses continue to build on Fuji’s compact and retro-style (Fuji would say “classic" style) X-Series line.
