Camera manufacturers take pride in how many focus points are available in new models, and the number seems to be increasing with every introduction. From a user’s perspective, the phase “more is better” often rings true.

It‘s no secret that there’s been a dramatic shift from DSLR to mirrorless camera systems on the part of consumers and manufactures alike. But some photographers are hanging on to their trusty DSLRs for making certain types of images.

The Hasselblad 907X 50C camera is so different from the sorts of cameras most of us shoot with, I feel like I almost need a new vocabulary to describe it. If a visitor from Area 51 handed me the device used on their planet to take pictures, I’d expect it to strongly resemble this ‘blad. It is at once familiar and yet radically different. Using it made me feel like I was at Disney’s World of Tomorrow exhibit, sampling the future and finding it surprisingly intuitive.

The current trend in cameras is clearly moving in the direction of full-frame mirrorless models with super-high resolution, and the megapixel race shows no signs of abating. But is this based upon sound photographic principles, or does creative marketing and the “Gear Acquisition Syndrome” factor into the equation?

One of the most important skills in the early development of all photographers is knowing how to interpret the light falling on a scene, and then choosing the camera settings that will result in a perfectly exposure photo. With a bit of knowledge and practice, this quickly becomes second nature—enabling you concentrate on other key variables that make up a great image.

Most of you are familiar with the farcical notion that, “You’re not a real photographer unless you always use your camera’s Manual mode.” Well, the video below takes the opposite and equally controversial view.
