While walking on a paved path to a Hilton Head beach, I heard a rustle in the narrow thicket of brambles and poison ivy between me and a small body of water. Fighting thru that daunting wall of vegetation, I spotted four juvenile yellow-crowned night herons on their nest. Inching closer as the wall of vines permitted, I captured many amazing images. At times, one or both of their beautiful and graceful parents -- themselves actually smaller than the chicks -- came for a feeding, dropping predigested food into the begging baby's gullets.
